Biomaterials are any natural or synthetic material that interfaces with living tissue and/or biological fluids. Research activity covers everything from fundamental biomaterials science to clinical applications such as joint replacements, artificial bone grafts, bone cement, artificial cartilege, ligaments and tendons, dental implants, blood vessel prostheses and stents, heart valves, skin repair (artificial tissue), and cochlear replacements.
Certain physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics render some materials more desirable than others for biological application. In the TCBE, we are focussed primarily on advanced ceramics, polymers and composites for bioengineering applications. Our activities interface strongly with the regenerative, neural and cardiovascular research themes.
