MSc in Neuroscience: Module EE-7900 Neural Engineering
Overview
This module will provide an introduction to the field of neural engineering from a neuroscience perspective. Students will apply engineering principles to understand the excitation of nerve and muscle, the generation of bioelectric signals and artificial stimulation of biological tissues. Common methods of stimulating, recording and analysing neural systems will be examined. The basic principles and methods studies will then be applied to examine specific neuroscience applications of neural engineering, such as biomarkers for neurological and neuromuscular disorders.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Calculate ionic currents and voltages in cell membranes and derive models of action potential generation and propagation in excitable cells.
- Describe quantitative methods for the monitoring of neural activity
- Select materials for their properties in order to acquire neural activity
- Design appropriate paradigms to elicit and select appropriate methods to analyse neural activity for clinical and research applications.
- Analyse the effects of electrical stimuli applied to biological tissues.
- Design appropriate paradigms for selective electrical stimulation of biological tissues for clinical and research applications.
- Describe and discuss specific applications of neural engineering to restore function and interface with the human nervous system.
