Comparison of Global motion estimators

Abstract: The estimation of Global or Camera motion from image sequences is important both for video retrieval and compression (MPEG4). Although several of these algorithms exist, there has been little effort to attempt to compare their performance. Such comparisons would have an impact on the use of these schemes in retrieval systems in particular. This paper provides such a comparison, using two algorithms that represent two classes of estimator. It transpires that the Robust Estimator provides temporally smoother estimates which implies that it may be better suited to extraction of a global motion feature for retrieval.
