INESC PORTO
Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit

INESC PORTO is a private, non-profit association, affiliated to the University of Porto and dedicated to research, technological development and advanced training in information technologies and telecommunications. The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit is composed of about 50 researchers (9 PhD's and 20 MSc's) and is organized in R&D groups whose activities may be divided in three main areas: Signal and Image Processing, Network Architectures and Advanced Communication Services and Microelectronics. The Unit has a large experience of R\&D projects in the framework of European programs (RACE, ESPRIT, ACTS), national programs funded by government agencies as well as industrial contracts.

Relevant to MOUMIR is the current research in distributed multimedia applications, digital television, transmission of audio-visual information over narrowband and broadband networks, low bit rate video coding and high compression image coding. Important results have been achieved recently in ACTS projects (ATLANTIC - Advanced Television at Low bit rates And Networked Transmission over Integrated Communication systems; SCALAR - Scaleable Architectures with Hardware Extensions for Low Bitrate Variable Bandwidth Real-time Video-communication) and a national funded R\&D project (VIDION - Digital Video On Line).

With its experience in retrieval techniques, INESC will lead the work in database technology work and together with RTP provide the VIDION platform as a test bed for MOUMIR ideas. It will further participate in the audio indexing work and also provide a site for placement and exchange of students within the Network. Their expertise in database management provides the ideal compliment to the remaining partners in the network.
